Naming of muscles

Muscle names seem to take numerous forms:

  • mesosterno-procoxal (unappended)
  • extrinsic palpal muscle (appended!)
  • ventral premental adductor
  • ventral salivarial dilatator
  • glossal flexor
  • retractor of the mouth angle (not 'mouth angle retractor'?)
  • longitudinal muscle of the sucking pump
  • mesopleuro-third axillary sclerite of hind wing (sounds like this is_a axillary sclerite, and do we need "of the wing"?)
  • pl2-fu2b (need to avoid these probably)

We need to think about how to standardize muscle terminology. Should we define the types of muscles, based on their function?

  • adductor is_a muscle
  • ventral premental adductor is_a adductor

What is a good naming scheme? Start the name with the site of origination and end with site of insertion, appended with 'muscle'?

  • mesosterno-procoxal muscle
