Mandible teeth

Mandibles often have serrations on the cutting edge. how should we refer to these subdivisions? Current conventions include:

  • 'tooth' - This might create confusion with respect to vertebrate anatomy ontologies. Is a hymenopteran tooth homologous to a vertebrate tooth? Do we cede this term to our vertebrate colleagues?
  • 'denticle' - This also refers to a scale-like structure on the dermis of some vertebrates (e.g., fish), though it is not currently in the teleost anatomy ontology.

Also, how do we refer to the different serrations. The literature has terms like 'upper tooth' or 'dorsal tooth' - but these qualifier depend on head orientation. What about a numbering system?
