How do I add my term?
From HAO Wiki
You searched for your favorite structure but couldn't find it? While there are no hard and fast rules as to which terms should be added to the HAO there are several things to consider before adding terms.
Prior to adding a term
- Is it a "synonym" of a term already in there? By "synonym" we mean can you find a term that is defined with a definition that you would accept for the term. Our definitions are in the genus differentia format, which might read a little strange at first. Take a minute to get familiar with this format.
- If so, you should add the term but need not worry about providing a definition or relationships to other terms. You will have to add a synonym tag to the term which points it the equivalent term with a definition. You might also want to add a alternative definition tag to the parent term.
- Is this structure common and frequently referred to?
- If so you should add the term (but check our references first and add a reference if needed)
- If not, can it be composed from existing terms in HAO and/or other ontologies?
During addition
Following addition
All terms need to be tied into the ontology through a relationship. All terms must have a "is_a" relationship, and may have a "part_of" relationship. Not that some "is_a" relationships imply "part_of", so you might not need to add the latter. If in doubt add both, this gives us context, and we can always correct or remove a "part_of" if need be.
