HAO to

Overview
The HAO project is dedicated to facilitating the contributions of the larger scientific community. Contributions to the project can be made in a variety of different ways which will be outlined here. The mechanisms for contributing to the project are in different stages of development, and some are certain to evolve.
If you are considering making direct contributions the first step is to familiarize yourself with help that is already available, in particular the FAQ. While we are attempting to simplify the process of making contributions to the HAO there are still plenty of areas for confusion.
FAQ
Adding data
- How do I get an account to access the web interface to the HAO?
- Contact Katja Seltmann and let her know a little bit about who you are and how you want to contribute (this can be very minimal).
- How do I use the web interface?
- How do I add my term? (and define it)
- How do I reference a term? (i.e. how should I cite my additions)
- How do I relate my term?
- How will my contributions be acknowledged?
- Some types of contributions are automatically acknowledged on the glossary website. All contributors will be ultimately listed on this wiki. Following our initial announcement paper we are planning a larger paper in which we plan to include those who made significant contributions. Details as to how to do this are being worked on, if you have suggestions we'd love to hear them.
- How do I add an alternative definition?
- My concept/term seems to be a slightly more specific than an existing case. How do I add a "special case" of an existing term?
Annotations
- A term is present but I think there is a problem with it. How do I attach a comment to a term?
- What are tags?
- Can I create a new keyword to be used in tags?
- What do the existing keywords mean and when should I use them?
Making multiple simultaneous updates
- Can I add many terms at once?
- stub
- Can I update many terms at once, for example proving definitions from a text file?
- stub
Referencing/Citation
- What's the best way to tie data in my publication to the HAO?
- We're working on defining this, but for there are three things that should be referenced: 1) One or more HAO ids, like HAO:0000123; 2) The timestamp version of the HAO you are referencing; and 3) please cite the HAO (see below). The combination of 1&2 ensure that your intended meaning is not misconstrued as the HAO evolves.
- How do I cite the glossary?
- How do I cite the NSF ABI grant funding the HAO?
- NSF DBI 0850223 to Andy Deans
- How do I create persistent links to the HAO?
- right now the best way to create links to the HAO for embedded in publications is through BioPortal. We have created a bioportal link creater as part of the proofing tool that returns urls for each HAO term referenced in a block of text. Here is a demo video.
- an example link looks like this: http://bioportal.bioontology.org/visualize/40660/HAO:0000000
- links are created with a base url: bioportal.bioontology.org/visualize/ + HAO version number: 40660/ + HAO dbxref for the term: HAO:0000000
- the HAO version number will change depending on which version of the HAO you reference. This id can be found on the BioPortal site here and the version number should be cited as part of the HAO citation.
